Land-Based Learning

The video, Land Based Indigenous Studies in the WRDSB, is a great video for educators to watch who would like to incorporate land-based pedagogy into their teaching practices. When watching, The Indigenous Studies in the WRDSB Video, lightbulbs started to go off in my head. I was able to make many connections to the information presented in this video as well as able to make references to many other benefits of using this teaching method. As someone who loves learning through hands-on activities as well as someone who has experienced first-hand the benefits of spending time outdoors, I could see how many students would thrive from experiencing land-based education. When the video presented examples of how students can learn from Mother Nature, I started to think of many curriculum expectations in different subject areas, specifically in science, social sciences, math and HPE. As someone who has a passion for languages, I want to learn more about incorporating land-based education in second language acquisition. I started to think of ways to do this in units students will study in FSL such as the environment. However, the ideas I have come up with are very limited. As I continue to research and go through different resources, I am hopeful I will find appropriate ways in doing this over the next couple of days.
